This weekend – August 1-3, 2014 – is a Virginia sales tax “holiday” for a long list of “back to school” type items. This applies whether a person is in school or not. The official bulletin states that“items need not be intended for use in school or in connection with a school activity to be eligible for the exemption.”
Quite a lot of the items that are listed as school supplies are also office supplies – binders, markers, legal pads, copy paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Each single item must be under $20, but there is no cap on the total.
Also, clothing and shoes are sales tax-exempt up to $100 per item (not in total). If you are in need of any office supplies or clothing, this may be the time to stock up! The full list of items that are and are not included can be found here.
